Dear Puma

  • July 19, 2017

This poem was inspired by the organization #SaveLACougars which is educating the public about Los Angeles’ mountain lion population. The group is spearheading a fundraising effort to build a wildlife crossing over the freeway at Liberty Canyon.

Dear Puma

With your haunting grace,
paws witty and sharp

You long for love, thwarted not by distance,
you would gladly run miles through hills and scrub brush for a romantic tryst

but by scars of concrete criss-crossing the land
travelled by two-leggeds and their shrouds of metal –

hard and fast
their constant rumbling sending shivers up your spine

Patience, dear puma, liberty is near
